As we pause this weekend to celebrate Labor Day, let’s take a moment to remember why this holiday exists, and why it still matters.
Labor Day was born out of struggle and solidarity.
In the late 19th century, at the height of the Industrial Revolution, workers were fighting for fair wages, reasonable hours, and safe conditions. The first Labor Day was celebrated in 1882 by union workers in New York City, and by 1894, it became a federal holiday, following the tragic Pullman Strike, where federal troops were called in to break a nationwide railroad strike, leading to fatalities.
🛠️ Unions have always been the backbone of progress—championing the 8-hour workday, workplace safety, pensions, and the right to negotiate.
And now, they stand on the front lines once again.
